Born in Lithuania, raised in Israel and living in Paris, Esther Shalev-Gerz has developed her artistic practice for more than twenty years around questions linked to the construction of memory, personal or collective. Her interpretation of history is solidly rooted in the present of its protagonists: most of her works are created in dialogue with the inhabitants of a specific place or the witnesses to a particular event. The Lausanne exhibition highlights the specific ways in which the artist deals with issues of knowledge, memory, history and testimony through the space of the installation. It brings together a large selection of videos, as well as slide projections, photographs and documentation of the site specific works, among them numerous projects for memorials and community based projects.
